Smile! A Raina Telgemeier Fan in the Making

As one who loves books, there's nothing better than getting completely absorbed and decidedly lost in a bookstore! This past summer, my family and I visited Mrs. Dalloway's, a bookstore in Berkeley, CA, where you can do exactly that. There, we perused rows and rows of books about gardening, cooking, green living, politics and art. A fragrance beckoned. We followed our nose and found ourselves in the Children's area where the aroma wafting in from the cafe next door filled the air with the smell of coffee and bacon. Yes. Bacon and books. It was heavenly!

My kids sat in the reading corner of the Children's section, intensely reading books. My older daughter had already collected a stack of books she just absolutely needed to have, and my younger daughter was completely immersed in graphic novel Smile by Raina Telgemeier, gleefully giggling to herself. We allowed the girls to purchase one book each - a gut-wrenching decision for the older, but a no-brainer for the younger!

As we line up to pay for the books they have chosen, they discover a flyer for a super cool opportunity - write a book review for Bookley Book Blog and you get a free Advance Reader Copy if your review gets published on the website. What fun! Once we got home, my younger daughter got right to work writing a book recommendation for Smile, her new favorite graphic novel. To her great delight, her recommendation got published on the Bookley Book Blog!

I can't tell you how much confidence my younger daughter has gained from this experience. A visit to Mrs. Dalloway's bookstore resulted in adding a wonderful book to her personal collection and she has now written a book review for a wider audience than she could ever imagine. At six years old, she was a published writer!

The fun doesn't end there...on October 30th, Hicklebee's, a bookstore based in San Jose, CA, will host Raina Telgemeier for a book talk and signing about her new book, Ghosts. This girl is such a big fan of Raina Telgemeier - you betcha we bought tickets to meet her favorite author!

Follow along with me in the journey to encourage literacy at home in real and authentic ways.  From my home to yours, I want to empower you to increase reading and writing skills  with your kids and for your kids. So, who wants to come along with us to meet Raina Telgemeier?

Literacy at Work / Playing with Literacy

What a fantastic literacy event! Look at all the reading, thinking, communicating, collaborating, and designing in a gummy bear parachute challenge! It was a delight reading all the families' stories at the end of the day, too. What a pleasure it was to co-present with truly inspiring parent presenters and to work with the wonderful staff at SCCOE. If you missed the event this time, look for it again in the spring focusing on STEAM!
